Islay

Die südliche Insel Islay gilt als eigenständige und separate Whiskyregion und ist unter Whiskykennern sehr beliebte. Sie liefert einen sehr kräftigen Whisky mit einem starken Rauchgeschmack. Islay setzt auf Torf beim Darren und durch diesen Vorgang gelangen diese kraftvollen Aromen in den Whisky. Zusätzlich zeichnen sich diese Whiskys durch maritime Noten (Algen, Salz) aus. Alle Noten, die man in einem Islay Whisky wahrnimmt, hängen hier in der Luft. Destillerien wie Ardbeg, Lagavulin, Laphroaig, Caol Ila, Porten Ellen genießen Weltruhm.

Einige wenige Whiskys aus dieser Region sind wenig rauchig, darunter zum Beispiel Abfüllungen von Bunnahabhain und Bruichladdich.
